Celiac Disease, Gluten, and the Dangers of Kissing

If you have a severe case of Celiac Auto-Immune Disease, keep in mind that kissing can be a danger for you, depending on what your partner has been drinking or eating.

If your make-out buddy has been drinking beer, you can still get a big dose of gluten from French kissing him or her, which may cause blisters on your gums and pain for many days.

By tongue kissing alone, not ingesting the beer yourself, you probably won’t suffer any problems further down in your digestive tract, but your mouth may suffer if you are sensitive. Once you have a wound in your mouth, you are more susceptible to all other illnesses.

If your partner is eating regular wheat white flour bread sandwiches, pizza, cookies, or pastries, there will be particles in his or her mouth, stuck between the teeth and floating around, that may come into your mouth when you kiss.

After your partner eats gluten foods, before kissing, suggest a teeth brushing or mouthwash. Flossing would be ideal, but that’s an awkward conversation that doesn’t go over well early in the dating process. A rinse of water is better than nothing.

For beer drinkers, request a water swisharoo if they want to kiss.

Getting people to eat and drink the same things as you is often easier than getting them to wash their mouth, so that is another safe route, especially if you are making dinner.

Days or weeks of pain is not worth one night of kissing, is it?

Ok, sometimes it is.

If your partner doesn’t care enough about you, though, to, at least, rinse their mouth with some water before kissing you, then they are not very clean and maybe they aren’t worth your time anyway.

Some people may in fact have the same intolerance to gluten as you and not know it yet.

By having an honest conversation about it, about the symptoms, about the triggers, you may enlighten someone else, and improve their life. You never know.

If you don’t want to have a conversation about Celiac Disease or gluten, you can avoid mouth kissing and go for the neck.

My hair is the physical evidence for why I strongly support and encourage eating gluten free, among many other reasons.

If you have Celiac Disease and are still eating gluten, you will be malnourished because your digestive tract is tore up from the floor up my friend.

If you can’t get the food properly into your body and blood stream, it sure isn’t going to your hair.

As a result of this malnourishment due to your damaged digestive tract, you will have several major health problems, from low blood sugar to migraines to mood issues to thin brittle early greying hair.

When I was born, my mom said I had a weird layer of dead skin cells on my head for two years and my hair wouldn’t grow. No doctors were able to help her. Around two years old, I guess, she peeled off the skin from my head and it finally started to grow.

Still, my hair was always thin and brittle and didn’t grow as long as I would have liked.

In my thirties, when I learned I was intolerant to gluten and stopped eating gluten, my hair started to grow in thicker, darker, shinier, and faster! I even had hairs that were grey and kinky  start growing in dark straight and lovely.

When I started eating gluten free, I had a complete reversal of my hair from so-so normal to fabulous.

Now that I am trudging along in my thirties, everyone assumes I color my hair and they make somewhat rude comments to me in reference to when I had lighter less lovely hair. I have even had people think I was wearing a wig!

“Is that your real hair?”

I am happy to point out the few strands of silver hair I have to prove the rest is actually natural dark hair.

FINAL HAIR NOTES

Avoiding sun and hats is important to healthy hair, as both damage the hair and scalp. A loose straw or cotton hat is best if you are going to be in the sun, so your head and hair can breath.

When you are away from the sun, take off the hat, massage your head, lighten up your hair, and give a good water rinse that night.

Likewise, if you ride a motorcycle or are a fireman and often wear a helmet, make sure to give your head some extra love and cleansing to remove the grime. If your hair is blocked, it can’t grow.

Intaking toxins like smoke, drugs, and alcohol are also going to infringe on your overall health and of course affect the outcome of your hair.

When my brother was being pumped with the strongest drugs on the planet to keep him alive for over a month in the hospital, shortly after he recovered, he lost a lot of his beautiful hair and the new hair grew in redder, kinky, and thinner. His hair was permanently damaged by the illness and drugs. As he has just switched to a gluten free diet, we’ll see if that helps his hair any.

What grows out of your head is partly due to genetics, but it is also how healthy you are, what you do, and how you eat.

WARNINGS: Other than Celiac Disease, you may have a different major health issue causing your hair to be brittle or fall out, like Anemia, Diabetes, liver failure, and Cancer, to name a few. If eating healthy isn’t enough to help your hair, you want to make sure you do not have a life threatening illness.

As with poop, hair (particularly for women) is an indicator of how healthy you are — you can see what is going on inside your body by what comes out!

Quick Cures for Severe Stomach Aches and Abdominal Spasms

For millions of people, unbeknownst to them (or their doctors), ingesting gluten will cause uncontrollable painful abdominal spasms, spot bleeding outside a woman’s menstruation period from a spasming uterus, diarrhea or constipation from a spasming colon.

Since my earliest childhood memories, I had miserable stomach aches. In my 20s, it escalated to crazy incapacitating pain with terrible abdominal spasms in my stomach, my intestines, and my uterus.

The pain caused me serious embarrassment at home, in my private life, and at the work place, where people thought I was a complete freak for laying on floor, buckled over, and writhing in pain — not to mention the farting that would soon follow. They thought I was just putting on show, trying to get attention, when the reality was that of complete and utter humiliation.

At least 20 doctors were absolutely 100% useless. Not one single doctor could do the simple math: stomach + wrong food = abdominal pain. Duh! Not one single doctor ever asked me what I was eating. And having tried several different diets myself, I couldn’t figure it out because gluten is in EVERYTHING (it seemed at the time) — it was in everything that I had been eating, “healthy” or otherwise.

Once I stopped eating gluten (found in foods made with white wheat flours, like pastries, pizza crusts, breads, crackers, cookies, food thickeners, and all the other junk foods, plus beverages like beer), my abdominal spasms ceased!

It went from a daily issue, that was entirely ruinous to my life, to only a few times a year now when I go out to eat at a restaurant or have a tainted food product at home.

QUICK FIXES to gluten-induced painful abdo spasms and gaseous farty flatulence…

The first thing you want to do is try to eat and drink glutenfree.

Even with best glutenfree behavior, you will still have issues with tainted food, so try these:

#1 PEPTO BISMOL !!! Life saver! Truly. Get traditional flavor pink.

You can get liquid or chew tablets. Liquid works better, but chew tablets are light and small and you can have them in your purse or wallet at all times!

At the hospital, when you overdose or have other abdominal food intake issues, they now use a fancy black version of Pepto, basically. (see #2)

Active Ingredient: Bismuth subsalicylate

Inactive Ingredients: benzoic acid, flavor, magnesium aluminum silicate, methylcellulose, red 22, red 28, saccharin sodium, salicylic acid, sodium salicylate, sorbic acid, water

#2 CHARCOAL PILLS These are the healthy super basic form of Pepto Bismol with no pink dye or other ingredients and they are found at health food grocery stores, nutrition centers, and drug stores.

#3 TUMS antacids. Mint! Don’t get the fruit flavor, it will make you want to vomit.

Tums are basically just calcium, so it’s not like you are taking a bunch of effed up meds.

“Although we do not use gluten as a filler in TUMS, there may be trace amounts of gluten in TUMS Smoothies Cocoa and Cream flavor via ingredients that are supplied by outside vendors. Other products of TUMS do not contain gluten. Review the “inactive ingredients” section on the bottle label to see if the variety you have selected contains gluten.”

Tums even has a Tums punching out a burrito on their ad right now — burritos have white flour tortillas (gluten), beans (gaseous), tomatoes (acidic), and hot peppers (ouch)… all great candidates for abdominal pain.

#4 GAS-X My mom lives by this stuff. She won’t stop eating gluten. What can you do? Different generation.

Active Ingredients: Calcium and Simethicon

Inactive ingredients: bunch of manmade stuff

#5 HOT MILK if you are NOT lactose intolerant, milk is a quick alkaline substance to sooth your digestive track. Milk, cheese, and yogurt help me a lot when I have pain or hunger. If you are lactose intolerant, dairy will be the ruin of you.

#6 BANANAS are alkaline and a soothing food to eat, if you need to eat something while you are going through this pain.

#7 SPASFON is an abdomen spasm-targeting medication you can only get in France — I have no idea why it’s not available in the USA or elsewhere, but it is belly ache gold and works better than ANYTHING I have ever used. So if you are visiting France, make sure to get some of this! A doctor prescribed it to me there. Is magick! If you have the money, it’s worth the trip!

Nothing completely saves you once the damage is done and you have already ingested something in the past three days, but these easily available remedies help a lot against belly aches and gas!

Seek out Calcium and ALKALINE natural substances for your intestinal troubles and food. Keep some of these suggested tablets with you.

Is Your Boss Killing You?

When your boss doesn’t allow you to take breaks to eat, essentially, he or she is killing you.

Without food, you will die. It’s as simple as that.

Before you die, on your path to starvation, you will become a total jerk.

As basic as the concept of eating is, somehow, many control freak bosses just don’t get it. They don’t get that with food, you will be in a better mood, your brain will be clearer, you will have better ideas, you will have more strength, and you will work faster.

At a certain point, after many hours of not eating, you become irritable, yet don’t seem to know why because your brain is muddled from hunger.

When your blood sugar drops, you may become enraged, dizzy, confused, slow, depressed, short-tempered, or get a migraine.

This is your body telling you that you need to eat!

Strangely enough, I have had several bosses deny me of my lunch or dinner breaks for some really stupid thing that just had to get done in that moment. Although I faintly remember the reasons why I was forced to skip meals, I very strongly remember the terrible physical symptoms from not eating.

Perhaps you are your own slave-driving a-hole boss, hmmmm? You are working for yourself and you still don’t stop to eat. It’s so important that you do eat!

Whether it takes 15 minutes or 1 hour to get and eat your food, you have to eat! Never let a boss or a deadline deprive you of that. There is no reason to validate your not eating.

Even if you are in the medical industry dealing with life and death situations, if you don’t stop to eat and sleep, you may make fatal mistakes. Demand breaks. Demand that someone cover you. Whether you have to drive a vehicle or operate on a body, you have to be well fed to do it well! Snacks help between meals, but they do not suffice in the place of a full meal.

Eat! 

Eat well. Eat frequently. Avoid sugars and processed foods with lots of ingredients that could actually make you feel worse than eating nothing at all. Cut traditional soda pop out of your diet all together; it’s just cancer in a cup. If you wouldn’t feed something to an animal, do you really want to feed it to yourself or the people you love?

Why Am I Getting Fat on My Gluten Free Diet?

Are you getting fat on a gluten-free diet?

On the Dr. Oz show they brought up a statistic, saying that, “a study found that 81% of people suffering from celiac disease (a gluten-intolerant auto immune disease) who followed a gluten-free diet gained weight.”

They attributed this weight gain to eating “gluten-free junk food.” What they didn’t discuss is something much more important than junk food.

Do not maintain a gluten-free diet in hopes of losing weight. Weight gain or loss is merely a side-effect to a gluten-free diet, not the goal.

One should be eating gluten-free to eliminate excruciating abdominal pain and other issues related to Celiac Disease.

The number one reason a person who has Celiac Disease may start gaining weight on a gluten-free diet is because while eating gluten, the intestinal tract is destroyed by ambitious white blood cells that hate gluten, this results in a tract that cannot properly absorb nutrients. When you stop eating gluten, your body stops reacting negatively and repairs itself. When healed, it can now absorb food, and as a result, naturally, you may gain weight.

Like with cancer patients, gaining weight could be a good thing for a person with Celiac Disease, it could mean the body is healing and functioning right.

So what do you do now, you don’t want to be fat?

I have Celiac Disease, how can I manage my weight?

Weight gain may be caused by a malfunctioning organ, eating unhealthy foods in excess, and/or lack of exercise .

If you want to be healthy, whether you have Celiac Disease or not, you have to do a few important things.

  1. Find out if your body parts all work properly, do you have a disease, allergy, or failing organ?
  2. Eat healthy natural foods, not processed, preserved, sugary, or fried
  3. Eat every 3-5 hours, small portions of healthy food; don’t starve yourself or overeat
  4. Exercise

This may mean changing what types of foods you eat and when.

At first, buying the right kinds of foods, looking at the ingredients, and preparing snacks for your day may seem inconvenient and challenging, but eventually it will become habit and therefore it will become easy.

Gluten-Free Junk Food is a recent development.

A gluten-free diet became associated with losing weight because in the old days, there weren’t any yummy gluten-free products like there are now. In the old days (ten years ago), pretty much everything had white enriched wheat flour in it, so to eat gluten-free meant eating only meat, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy, vegetables, fruit, and rice, which proved to be a lean diet by avoiding all the sugary pre-packaged snack foods, cookies, bread, pizza,sandwiches, and so on.

If you want to lose weight, avoid foods that have lots of ingredients and come in boxes and plastic bags.

Avoid comfort foods, fast foods, and sweets!

Gluten-free processed foods like cookies, crackers, cereals, and breads, may actually be higher in sugar and calories than its wheat flour counterparts. Do not go on a gluten-free diet expecting to lose weight, while continuing to eat processed foods, you will probably gain weight.

If you want to lose weight, avoid processed flour foods of all kinds, or at least dramatically minimize them.

Wall Street Journal Acknowledges Public’s Negative Physical Reactions to Wheat Gluten

Wall Street Journal, Health Journal Columnist writer Melinda Beck discusses public’s growing sensitivity to gluten.

Over at Discovery’s Edge, Mayo Clinic, one of the largest Celiac Disease treatment centers in the United States, there is a great article by Barbara Toman, from July 2010, that elaborates on the topic of what Beck discusses in the WSJ video. Read these profoundly insightful excerpts sandwiched together from the longer article:

Joseph Murray, M.D., a Mayo gastroenterologist, says celiac disease is becoming a public health issue. Studies show four times the incidence compared to 1950, with fatal complications if it goes untreated. “Celiac disease was rare, but it’s now more common in all age groups,” Dr. Murray says. Although the cause is unknown, celiac disease affects about one in 100 people. What’s more, Mayo has found a fourfold higher death risk for people with undiagnosed gluten intolerance. Celiac patients may suffer severe stomach pain and diarrhea if they eat even traces of the protein gluten, which is found in wheat, rye, barley and in many supermarket foods.

Celiac disease is an immune response to this common protein. The immune system attacks the villi, hairlike projections that line the small intestine. Because villi increase the intestine’s surface area, they help the body absorb nutrients. Think of the inside of a healthy intestine as looking like a deep-pile carpet. In a patient with untreated celiac disease, Dr. Murray says, the intestine “looks like a tile floor.” Patients may experience severe abdominal pain, diarrhea and weight loss. Not all individuals experience the same symptoms. Untreated gluten intolerance is associated with certain cancers, osteoporosis, infertility, skin rashes and joint pain.

As it turns out, just up the road in Minneapolis lay a gold mine of information: A collection of blood samples taken from Air Force recruits in the early 1950s amid concern about streptococcus outbreaks in barracks. Dr. Murray’s team tested the 50-year-old blood for gluten antibodies. Today’s young men were 4.5 times likelier to have celiac disease than the 1950s recruits.

He also urges people who suspect they have the disease to be tested before eliminating gluten from their diet, as that can cause a false-negative test result. At-risk patients include celiac patients’ family members and patients with type 1 diabetes, chronic diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, premature bone disease and infertility. About one-third of the population carries the genetic background for gluten intolerance — but only 1 percent of people have it. Gluten intolerance has the same gene as diabetes. “Many of the processed foods we eat were not in existence 50 years ago,” Dr. Murray says. Modern wheat also differs from older strains because of hybridization.

WSJ Melinda Beck mentioned how some parents say that when they put their kid on gluten free diet, symptoms of ADHD and Autism subside.

Many sources are now saying that 1% of people (1 out of 100) have Celiac Disease and a growing number of people are also having negative reactions to gluten, different from Celiac sufferers and different from the normal population who do not have a negative reaction. Several years ago, when I first learned I had Celiac Disease, the number given was 1 in 133.  So just in a few years, the number of people coming forward in the U.S. who are intolerant to gluten is rising.

Why the rise in an intolerance to gluten?

Beck spoke about how possibly the change in the production of wheat to boost protein may have caused the negative reaction in the human body. In the last 50 years, wheat has been bred to have a stronger and higher gluten protein content. The 1980s and 1990s brought the biggest changes to the anatomy of wheat by companies seeking to reap great financial rewards. These new hybrid wheat products, a good number of human bodies cannot process or handle.

Science moves much faster than the evolution of human genes! Surely scientists will provide you with a pill you can buy and add to your tasty gluten foods to make you think you can handle the bad foods that you shouldn’t be eating because they are damaging and weakening your body. Won’t that be swell? For the companies it will be swell, since they will make billions of dollars off your pain.

Isn’t it ironic that foods bred to be healthier and more widely available end up being unhealthy and even fatal to humans and animals? Too much of a good thing often turns out to be bad. Moderation and diversity are the keys to good health.

Chronic Inflammation on The Today Show

This morning on The Today Show they talked to Dr. Keri Peterson about Chronic Inflammation.

I kept waiting for them to bring up Celiac Disease, but they never did. Instead, it was the same kind of misinformation I received every time I went to the doctor for help.

Dr. Peterson talked about CAUSES of Chronic Inflammation being: obesity, depression, stress, and anxiety. These are not causes, they are symptoms of Auto-Immune Diseases like Celiac Disease!

Dr. Peterson talked about SYMPTOMS of Chronic Inflammation, that white blood cells are overactive and attack healthy cells; this is a symptom of Celiac Disease and Chronic Inflammation is a symptom from eating gluten.

As bizarre as a topic as this might be to you, your bowel movements are an extremely important part of your life and indicator of your health level.

On a gluten free diet, people with Celiac Disease have regular blissful bowel movements.

When you have Celiac Disease and you don’t know it, you continue to eat gluten-full foods and find yourself regularly constipated (like me), crapping only twice a week, or with diarrea and running like a leaky faucet (like my mom). Once you make the change to gluten free, you crap solid and regularly once or twice a day.

When I was sixteen and having a regular doctor’s checkup, I will never forget when I learned what a bowel movement was. My handsome doctor (who looked like Richard Gere and flirted with my mother in the room) tapped my knees with that rubber triangle thing and laughed at my kicking reflexes. “How are your bowel movements?” He asked me.

“Huh?” I asked. “What are bowel movements?”

I don’t remember what his medical answer was. It surely wasn’t “taking a shit or a crap or a poop,” but somehow he explained to me what bowel movements were in a professional manner. Feces… Excrement… Food that passes through your stomach and intestines to your bowels and then out of your body.

“I don’t know, fine, I guess,” I responded like a typical teenager. If you don’t know why a doctor is asking a question or what is the proper indicator of good health, it is impossible to answer the question with the kind of information a doctor would need to know that something is wrong.

The doctor didn’t probe further, for if he had, he would have found out how irregularly I had bowel movements.

Be aware that irregular or liquid bowel movements are a sign that something is wrong with you; it may not be Celiac Disease, but it is something.

Gluten Free or Die is a new website dedicated to helping people with chronic stomach pain and an assortment of other problems related to gluten intolerance.

If people call you a hypochondriac because you are always suffering from some bizarre unexplainable ailment like dizziness, migraines, depression, or extreme farting, maybe you have Celiac Disease. (Sounds like I am joking, but I’m not. )

Celiac Disease is common and usually misdiagnosed. It is a genetic auto-immune disease that is triggered by the intake of gluten: wheat, barley, and rye food products, such as pastries, bread, pizza, cookies, cereal, beer, and much more. As hard as it sounds to cut out those things from your diet, life on the other side is so much better; it’s worth it! Through this website, I will show you how such changes can be fun.
