Avoiding Genetically Modified Foods on Dr. Oz

I love the Dr. Oz show because he covers relevant and important topics about health for the safety of our lives.

Hopefully, the show will be able to maintain its autonomy despite the pressures of big business money.

Today’s show covered GMOs, genetically modified foods and crops.

On Dr. Oz was guest Jeffrey Smith who has a great website dedicated to helping you eat safer healthier non-GMO foods.

In this article is information from his site, which I have placed here because you really should know this stuff, but please go to his site nongmoshoppingguide.com and read more!

What’s the risk of eating GMO foods?

Jeffrey’s site has some frightening information unknown to the general public.

“Soon after GM soy was introduced to the UK, soy allergies skyrocketed by 50 percent.”

“In March 2001, the Center for Disease Control reported that food is responsible for twice the number of illnesses in the U.S. compared to estimates just seven years earlier. This increase roughly corresponds to the period when Americans have been eating GM food.”

“Milk from rbGH-treated cows contains an increased amount of the hormone IGF-1, which is one of the highest risk factors associated with breast and prostate cancer, but no one is tracking this in relation to cancer rates.”

“Various feeding studies in animals have resulted in potentially pre-cancerous cell growth, damaged immune systems, smaller brains, livers, and testicles, partial atrophy or increased density of the liver, odd shaped cell nuclei and other unexplained anomalies, false pregnancies and higher death rates.”

What can I do to avoid eating GMO foods?

What is a GMO?

“A GMO (genetically modified organism) is the result of a laboratory process of taking genes from one species and inserting them into another in an attempt to obtain a desired trait or characteristic, hence they are also known as transgenic organisms. This process may be called either Genetic Engineering (GE) or Genetic Modification (GM); they are one and the same.”

  • Using viruses or bacteria to “infect” animal or plant cells with the new DNA.
  • Coating DNA onto tiny metal pellets, and firing it with a special gun into the cells.
  • Injecting the new DNA into fertilized eggs with a very fine needle.
  • Using electric shocks to create holes in the membrane covering sperm, and then forcing the new DNA into the sperm through these holes.

Vegans, vegetarians, diabetics, and poor people are probably most at risk of eating GMO foods because of the ingredients and types of foods they are eating: soy, tempeh, tofu, canola oil, high fructose corn syrup, white flour bakery goods, and artificial sweeteners such as Aspartame, Equal, and Nutrasweet.

You really should look at the very long list of GMO foods and know what you are eating.

Processed foods without an Organic and NonGMO label should be avoided!

On my quest for good health, I was at my absolute sickest when I ate soy products (thinking they were healthier) instead of dairy and using artificial sweeteners instead of sugar; I was also still eating gluten foods.

Now I eat Organic products as much as possible. If you only buy one Organic product, make sure it is your milk!

For sweeteners I use honey, agave, Stevia (plant sweetener with no sugar content), and raw cane sugar. I try to mix it up because using one product all the time, even the healthy ones, can be bad for your body. Also, using small quantities of dairy and sugar is healthier.

What other countries care about eating GMO foods?

“In Europe, at least 174 regions, more than 4,500 councils and local governments have declared themselves GM free.”

In Japan, many US products are rejected.

What is sad is how many supposed Nutritionists are recommending Canola Oil as a “Healthy Oil” when it couldn’t be further from the truth. American Food companies are intentionally creating misinformation campaigns so they can use these low cost GMO ingredients for profit.

Thanks Carla! I will do some research on estrogen and soy for my Painful Periods post!

  3. Carla says:

GMO is so bad! It is not the only wrong with soy, though. Soy contains similar elements to estrogen. It is unknown what it can cause in people, women and men alike. I just signed the petition. This is a great piece. Keep spreading the word!
